Mandalay – Treasures of Mandalay

Oh the road to Mandalay, where the “dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!” And the “the mist is on the rice fields and the wind is in the palm trees.” It was Kipling's poem that introduced the West to Myanmar's trading capital, his verses of green landscapes as relevant now as they were a century ago. Touch down at the airport and the tropical colors seem to surround at every turn, especially as you stand upon Mandalay Hill and gaze across the city towards the mountains of the Silk Route. Be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel, where there's time to rest before you start your tour on Mandalay Hill, a serene place to take your bearings and admire the essence of old-world poetry.

A tour of the city connects the eras and introduces you to Myanmar and its people. Gold leaf glistens at Mahamuni Pagoda as local pilgrims pray beneath the bloated golden stomach of a Buddha statue. At Kuthodaw Pagoda, find 728 marble stone slabs, ancient Buddhist scriptures fill the world's biggest book. Next, it's the Shwenandaw Monastery, a brilliant 19th-century teak carving takes your eyes on a merry dance. For all of the Buddhist beauty, let's not forget that Mandalay is a traditional trading town. Workshops continue to produce unique items like wood carvings, gold leaf, and kalaga tapestries. Whole factories create intricate Buddha statues from wood, marble, gold, and more. Throughout history, the city has had much to trade with its neighbors. End the tour back at Mandalay Hill for a beautiful sunset over the green mountains.

Detailed Description

The ancient Silk Route traces a path through some of the great memoirs to Asia's civilization. Before sea travel, it was the Silk Route that connected the world as it stretched from Rome and Cairo to the far reaches of China and modern-day Myanmar. The Southern Silk Route offers an inspiring journey between two of Asia's great ancient cities: Mandalay and Dali. Back in the 1930’s, it was cobbled back together, the route winding through lush jungle and remote mountain landscapes, to be renamed the Burma Road. By 1942 and World War II, it was closed to foreigners with travel restrictions only lifted in 2013.

This 13-day itinerary celebrates the route as it traces a historical path through the jungle-clad mountains, evocative hill tribe villages, traditional trading towns, and the relics of Burma's iconic heritage. On one hand, it's a journey into the unknown through areas that haven't seen foreigners for the better part of the century. It's also a journey through ancient Western fascination, for this route connects the old world that was first documented by legendary traveler Marco Polo, in his 13th-century Book of the Marvels of the World.

Spend your first nights in Myanmar and start with the ancient treasures of Mandalay, still the country's preeminent trading city. Surrounding Mandalay to line the banks of the great Irrawaddy River, are three former capitals, each floats on a blanket of enchantment. Travel east into Shan State to climb the mountains that flicker with jungle tones and remote villages. Stop in the colonial hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin for a horse and carriage tour, then travel along one of Asia's most spectacular train routes to Hsipaw. Candlelight markets, hill tribe villages, remote ethnic minorities; these days offer a wonderful immersion in lands that have hardly ever been documented by the West.

Continue your journey as you cross into China to wind higher into the mountains for a complex landscape of ethnic minorities and evocative traditions. Follow the Silk Route and pass through Longchuan to Tengchong, the daily stops combine staggering nature with quaint local life. These are remote roads as monks meditate in lotus temples, and wooden houses evoke old-world China. It's a journey that culminates in Dali, a lavish town that dates back to the kingdom of Nanzhao in the 8th-century. Wonderfully preserved, Nanzhao offers a serene place to explore on foot after the spectacular journey by road. Look forward to meeting the Bai people as they are wrapped in white cloth as they walk through their town.

All transfers are in comfortable saloon vehicles, and you stay in the best available hotels – while this route has only been opened to foreigners recently, remember that it's been hosting visitors for many centuries; the hospitality is legendary.

Travel Review: Family Tour of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia & Myanmar, Yangon, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Angkor Wat, Halong Bay

Our search began, as with most, jumping around on various internet sites looking to establish travel on a unique tour of Southeast Asia.  Our goal, for a two week trip (14 days) for our family of three, was to experience Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

Currently living in Singapore, we have friends and coworkers who suggested some "areas" of the region and specific locations and sites that were defined as a "must see".  Along with those suggestions very often they included the comments on how beautiful, peaceful, and friendly this area of the world truly is.  In a word, "GO", and experience all that Southeast Asia has to offer and you will not be disappointed.

Our online research brought us to Zicasso, where we outlined at a very high level our goals of selected countries, types of experiences, hotel grade, type of room, and special accommodations related to allergies.  It was at this point and time that we were connected with our travel agency to begin constructing our tailor made tour.

Almost immediately, our agent was at our tailored need in guiding us and helping us craft our itinerary.  We found this travel agency to be extremely responsive and flexible, as well as, offering counsel and input.  At first glance, our travel goals for the two weeks appeared a bit aggressive, and as our travel agency began constructing a sample itinerary they asked us to review it closely to be sure we were going to be comfortable with the pace and travel that was to be required.

The process actually began with a phone call, basically an interview to understand our families' goals, needs, and desires for our hopeful experiences.  Ongoing communication took place via email, with extremely quick responses to our questions or requests for additional understanding as we continued to do our online research of the region and awaited our proposed itinerary and cost.

We remember receiving the itinerary, and the excitement for the potential of what we were about to embark on immediately jumped out of the pages.  The itinerary was very detailed indicating what would be taking place Day 1 thru Day 14.  Our private tour included a personal guide for each location and a personal driver and van at each location as well.  It listed their recommendation for the 4 - 5 star hotel at each destination and how and where we would be greeted upon arrival.

This last little component is one, as we actually traveled, we really came to appreciate.  Our trip essentially included 8 flights over the 14 days.  We arranged our travel to/from Singapore, our travel agency arranged all the other remaining transportation and flights.  The travel agency had a representative meeting us as we got off the plane.  In Vietnam for example, we just sat back as they managed and processed the express visa service, guided us through immigration and customs, assisted us in our bag collection, and then introduced us to our guide and driver as we headed to the hotel.

This experience was repeated as we arrived in Laos from Vietnam, in Cambodia from Laos, in Thailand from Cambodia, in Myanmar from Cambodia, and within Myanmar as we flew from Mandalay to Bagan, then flew from Bagan to Yangon.  In part, this part of the travel arrangements constructed by this travel agency removed what could have been a very stressful component of the trip and had us relaxed, as we watched other travelers standing in long lines or trying to understand what was required to pass into country.

Speaking of potential stress, in the past, we would manage all the travel arrangements ourselves.  We would construct the itinerary, including locations and sites, schedule in meals, manage local transportation, and try to take it all in at the same time.  Managing all of that takes away from the experience, adds stress, and if you need flexibility you are not prepared to adjust or understand how.  Our travel agency made all of that disappear and we simply got to sit back (ok, lots of walking and climbing, not exactly sitting back at a beach) and enjoy our trip.  Here is where we became impressed.  Our guides and drivers at each location were simply amazing.  How friendly and gracious they were, they became part of the experience.  We just didn't walk up a temple, we didn't simply see the sunrise at Angkor Watt, we heard and understood the history of what we were witnessing at each location.  The guides were incredibly knowledgeable.................and observant.  Without them, the trip's experience would have simply been reduced by 50% in appreciation and understanding.

We happened to travel from the end of June through the beginning of July.  This isn't exactly prime tour season for these destinations (usually Oct - Mar).  However, our family believes this made the experience that much more enjoyable.  The guides and drivers were thanking us for our patronage and for visiting and everyone we engaged was so polite.  This leads us right into the staff at each of the hotels.  As we came and went on our daily tours and returned in the late afternoon or early evening, we felt as though we were being welcomed home.  Often a cool drink, cool towel to refresh ourselves, and assistance greeted us each and every time.  Always this came with a smile and a thank you.  The people made our experience memorable and our travel agency put all of this together for our family.

Just when you think that the travel agency's personal touch couldn't get any better, our agent took the opportunity during our trip to actually meet us at the hotel while we were in Vietnam.  Ensured we had all the personal contact information necessary for each contact at each location, as well as, his own personal contact information.  He then presented out family with a small gift of appreciation.  Nice job and well done.  This was our first experience using both Zicasso and this travel agency and we were incredibly impressed.

Myanmar Vacation Review: Hot Air Balloon Ride, Horse Carriage Ride, Boating & Cruise, Sunsets
We loves the local guides provided for our trip. Their service are very superb and professional. The transportation were great and comfortable. Tour itinerary were well planned, with most of the attractions included. We enjoyed our trip very much.Just one comment, we were disappointed with our room allocation in most hotels. We have requested for room with twin sharing beds but almost all the hotels we went (except for the 1st hotel), we have to change as they had given us a double bed. And, usually the new room provided was not as good as the original room.

Travel Review: Solo Trip to Myanmar & Thailand, Bagan, Yangon, Inle Lake, Hot Air Balloon Tour

As promised, here is a follow up on my trip.First, a big thank you to my planner for the book, Burma: Rivers of Flavor, it is super and I will challenge myself to create some of the recipes.I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Myanmar. I had an excellent, informative guide and a delightful companion. I had no idea that she would accompany me throughout the trip, but I am happy she did. Most everything about the trip was delightful, and the balloon ride exceptional. Perhaps the only thing lacking was that which was in your brochure which stated meeting with local dignitaries or a cooking lesson. The temples were beautiful but by the third day in Bagan I was ready for something a bit different. As I was a solo traveller, my guide accomodated a slight change and we went into town, had a massage and I was delighted and grateful.I thank you for organizing an unforgettable experience.

Luxury Myanmar Vacation Review, Bagan, Temples, Hot Air Ballon Ride

Good trip. Good company. They made some stumbles (we requested twin beds but in every hotel we were given a king sized bed and had to correct their mistake) but overall were pretty good. I'd endorse Myanmar as a place worth traveling to. The people there are as friendly as described and our local guides did everything they could to make us feel welcomed and comfortable.

Travel Review: Luxury Trip to China, Beijing, Xi'an, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors

Very well planned trip and we liked the guides in each city.  Our guide in Beijing was our favorite and we really enjoyed the guide in Xi'an too.   There was always someone waiting for us at each destination and the transportation/drivers also did a good job.  We got to see everything we had hoped to - the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the high speed train, rickshaw ride, Forbidden City, CIty Wall in Xi'an, the skyline in Shanghai, Peking duck meal in Beijing (we actually had 2), the floating restaurant in Hong Kong, the harbor in Hong Kong and more.  We also got to experience pandas in Hong Kong at the amusement park on our free day, the Chinese calligraphy class, dancing with people in the French Park in Shanghai, and the meeting with the Cricket Master in Beijing was an unexpected trip highlight.

The head of the tour company also gave us a very nice personalized gift of a stamp in Chinese of each of our names - the same stamps artists and collectors put on the art in China.  We also had our guide help us buy a full sized Terra Cotta Warrior for our garden that is going to be shipped in September.

The guides gave us great information on the life of Chinese citizens as well.  The hotels were great  in that they were very upscale and well located for our day to day adventures.   I loved having a free day in each city as well - made the pacing of the trip better than in the past where we never had a down day that allowed us to sleep in a little and experience the city on our own terms.

I was very very happy with the service overall.
