Quito – Opulent Welcome to the Old City

Snow-capped volcanic mountains stand above Ecuador's capital, gazing down on a city that meanders through a valley. You're greeted at the airport and descend into Quito, driven down the slopes to the largest preserved colonial city in South America. At the heart of Quito is Plaza de la Independencia, where history hides beneath the ground, and fabulous 16th-century buildings gaze over a statue of independence. Your hotel is one of these buildings, and your balcony has a prime view. Recently redeveloped, the hotel relives the pomp and razzmatazz of when it was owned by a Spanish conqueror. Every detail harks to a distant era, fully immersing you in the city's past while you're relaxing in the bedroom. There's an astonishing dedication to the minute, from the feather quill on your side-table to paintings that hang above faded wood chairs. Check-in and relax... this opulent Ecuador journey has only just begun.

Detailed Description

Ecuador's historical wonders blend nature with culture. From the quaint streets of World Heritage Quito to the wild cliffs of a remote Galapagos island, the country delights in showcasing its inimitability to visitors. Experiences are exclusive here, whether you're surrounded by endemic birds, horse riding through Highland reserves, or admiring green sea turtles. Elevating the uniqueness of the destinations are three very different pieces of luxury accommodation. Begin your luxury tour of Galapagos Islands and Ecuador at the Plaza Grande, a fabulous hotel with five centuries of Quito's history carved into walls. Spend eight days on La Pinta, a stunning yacht taking you on a cruise to the Western Galapagos Islands. Then soak up the opulence of Hacienda Zuleta, a home that's housed the family of a former Ecuadorian president for over a century.

Quito's charming central streets are an ideal introduction to the country. Your hotel balcony overlooks the central Plaza de la Independencia while the interior takes you back to the excess of early colonial conquerors. A walking tour provides a glimpse of the city's glory, including a church that's completely laced in gold. Three nights in Zuleta are an equally historical way to complete the trip. Set in 2,000 hectares of nature reserve and a working farm, the glorious Hacienda offers sublime relaxation and the chance to horse ride beneath the swooping wings of condors. Spend evenings chatting with the owners, drinking wine and sampling the products from the onsite cheese farm.

La Pinta is one of the Galapagos's most luxurious yachts, offering an elegant cruise through the islands. For eight days, experience luxury Galapagos tours via cruise to the archipelago's most iconic sites, bringing intimate encounters with its surreal wildlife. You'll hike across volcanic lava flows, wander past flamboyant nesting sites, kayak with sea lions, and make daily snorkel and glass-bottom boat excursions. Afternoons and evenings are downtimes on the boat, allowing you to lounge on the spacious deck and watch the islands slowly drift past by. All meals are included, served in the superb dining room while drinks are shared in the open lounge. La Pinta's size offers exclusivity, with space on board allowing you to continue a private experience. Like Quito and Zuleta, the yacht allows you to experience Ecuador's wonder in the grandest of style.

Peru, Galapagos / Ecuador Vacation Review: Lima, Amazon, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Quito

We just returned from a trip to Peru and the Galapagos Islands. We visited Lima, the Amazon, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco, with an overnight stay in Quito.

The Zicasso-recommended travel agency created the perfect itinerary for us. All of the transitioning from place to place was seamless, the hotels were beautiful, the recommendations for restaurants were great, and the guides we had were amazing. They were so enthusiastic and willing to share their knowledge about past and current history. We were so impressed with our travel agency that we are already considering our next journey with them.

Galapagos / Ecuador Tour Review: Galapagos, Amazon, Cuenca, Baños, 18-Night Trip
Our Zicasso tour operator listened carefully and fulfilled all our requests. Our hotels were lovely and special. The restaurants were amazing. My only advice is that on the final night, it would have been easier to stay at the airport than to go back to Quito.

Luxury Galapagos Islands & Ecuador Vacation Review: Jungle, Ocean Cruise, Wildlife
We were totally pleased with the trip set up for us by the travel company.  As we arrived in Quito Ecuador at midnight, there was a representative from the company at the end of the jetway to take us through immigration and customs and to get us on the shuttle to the nearby hotel. The hotel at the airport was clean and modern, with a wonderful buffet selection for breakfast (included in our room rate).Back at the airport, the representative from the lodge met us as we walked into the terminal and had our tickets and boarding information for our flight to Coca.  There we were met by our naturalist guide, taken to their local office to refresh, and then the 90 minute ride down the Rio Napo to the lodge. The lodge was first class.  Wonderful rooms, food, excursions, etc.  It far exceeded our expectations for living in the jungle for 4 days.  Our Naturalist Guide and the local expert were a great team and made sure we saw most of what the jungle had to offer.Back in Quito, we spent the night at the hotel - an old hacienda renovated and brought up to modern specs.  The two llamas roaming the grounds were quite the greeting party.Again, we were met at the airport by the representative of the local tour agency with our tickets and documentation for going to the Galapagos Islands.  The 5 days on the ship were incredible.  A wonderful, professional crew, first class accommodations, and really good food.  The excursions were varied and gave us a nice introduction to the Islands.  Our Naturalist was so knowledgeable and she knew were to take us to see the best wildlife.  The giant tortoises were saved for our last outing, and they did not disappoint.Once again, Zicasso and your partners have provided me with a memorable experience that fulfilled a lifetime dream.Paul P.

Galapagos / Ecuador Travel Review: Quito, Cotopaxi, Cloud Forest, Local Cuisine, 10-Day Tour

We had a very nice trip to Quito, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands. The people in Quito were very friendly and we felt very safe. We were initially concerned based on what we saw in the media, but Zicasso's travel agency checked with the hotel and guides, and said all was fine. We are glad we listened and went on the trip.

Our guide was excellent and we spent four days touring around Quito, Cotopaxi, the cloud forest, and Otavalo Market. Then we flew to Galapagos and went on a four-night cruise. It was an amazing experience seeing sea turtles, sea lions, penguins, sharks, and giant tortoises. The landscapes were beautiful and we got some great pictures on our nature walks. The crew and guide in the Galapagos were top-notch. The meals on the boat were fabulous as well. Make sure you are physically able to do long walks, sometimes on rough terrain, and go snorkeling, as they kept us busy multiple times per day. We highly recommend visiting Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Travel Review: Galapagos Island & Ecuador, Quito City Tour, Snorkeling, Swimming with Marine Life
Excellent city tour of Quito. Knowledgeable guide in the Galápagos Islands. Great snorkeling. Then the coronavirus caused the second half of our trip to be cancelled. Didn’t get to go to the Amazon. Couldn’t even go see the land tortoises on our last day.  At least we got out of Ecuador before they closed the border!
