Istanbul – Traditional Hamam Welcome to Istanbul

Exotic delights welcome you to Istanbul. Fabulous domes reflect in the Bosphorus, cobbled streets smell of fresh pastry, and there's an immediate impression of being immersed in a bygone era. While Rome's Western Empire was disposed of in the 5th century, Roman Constantinople and Byzantine survived for almost another 1,000 years. Evidence of this glorious past is omnipresent and views of an empire come directly from your private terrace at your five-star hotel. Admire the antiquity that lines the corridors, settle into your deluxe suite, and soak up an exclusive hospitality once reserved for emperors.

Today is designed to be relaxed and therapeutic. The historical revelations will start tomorrow. Before then, a salubrious Ottoman treatment helps overcome any travel fatigue. Traditional hamams started to dominate the city soon after Constantinople became Istanbul in 1453. Lie back on a steaming hot stone, a tiny domed ceiling casting beams of light through the mist. Using a prodigious roll of cloth and soap, layers of dirt are scrubbed from your open pores. After the scrubbing, settle into the sauna before enjoying a cup of Turkish coffee in the cafe. Completing the exotic welcome to Istanbul, tonight's dinner is accompanied by a Whirling Dervish performance, the hypnotized Sufis spinning without pause as you tuck into a sundry meze.

Detailed Description

The planet's greatest two empires fought their battles in what is now Turkey. Ancient Greece expanded west, creating magnificent regional capitals and almost mythical tales as they conquered the land. A thousand years later, Rome was spreading its influence east. Battles raged and the Romans built on the architectural legacy of the land's former rulers. This unique tour to Turkey and Greece reveals the historical splendor and exquisite beauty of both ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Start the vacation with three days in Istanbul and complete the trip with three nights in Athens, both lavish destinations that epitomize the empires' grandeur and charm. In between, three ancient cities interweave the narratives. Four thousand years of Greco Roman history is magnificently preserved and presented as you visit Troy, Ephesus, and Pergamum, each with its foundations in Greece and its final narratives in Rome.

No evocation of these empires would be complete without the opulent musings and revered indulgence of its rulers and gods. This itinerary offers a thick slice of historic luxury through carefully selected boutique hotels and a dedication to the small details. Enjoy beautiful banquets at renowned restaurants, bedrooms bursting with antiquity, and therapeutic spa treatments. Expert local guides turn ruins into real stories as they reveal the tales that escaped popular history books. And there are few more suggestive sights than lounging on a private terrace and watching the sun set over a four millennia old city. Including half a dozen UNESCO World Heritage sites, this private tour showcases some of the planet's most redolent and refined attractions.

Start the tour in Istanbul, discovering the Constantinople that was capital of the Roman Byzantine Empire until the 15th century. A traditional hamam experience helps relieve any travel fatigue before two days of guided tours open up Roman splendor. Byzantine treasures mix with Ottoman resplendence as an exotic portrait is sensually revealed. On day four you fly to Izmir and settle into the heart of Asia Minor. A luxurious village guesthouse overlooks the fertile slopes that Greece and Rome resonantly shaped. Three ancient cities are explored at a leisurely pace. Start in mysterious Pergamum and decide if it's on ode to Zeus or a throne for Satan, as St. John once declared. Spend day five in fabulous Ephesus, discovering the Ionian columns and immense majesty of a regional capital that once rivaled Rome. On day six you travel to the legendary city from Homer's Iliad and wander amongst the vast remains of Troy.

Two-thousand years ago the journey from Byzantine to Athens would have involved many days of marching. The cities are now connected by short daily flights and your arrival in Athens quickly resumes the immersion in classical narratives. Western civilization was born here, emanating from the Acropolis and historic Pantheon that shimmer beneath a glowing Mediterranean sun. Spend a day exploring the temples and landmarks of the Acropolis and Ancient Agora, each resplendently preserved as they showcase the origins of an ancient empire. On day nine you discover a scattered collection of ruins and sites, the historical journey interrupted by quaint wanders through 19th century neighborhoods of marble. Depart Athens on day ten, two empires fully explored and a succession of abiding memories spinning through your mind.

Note that this itinerary is easily extended for those with more time. Turkey is filled with Greco Roman history and destinations like Hierapolis and Aphrodisias can be easily included. For more information, visit the Turkey tours section on Zicasso.

Luxury Turkey Vacation Review: Pergamum, Ephesus, Aphrodisias, Pamukkale, Antalya, Cappadocia, History, 1-Week Trip
Bulent set up an excellent trip for our group to cover the major sites in Turkey. His choice of the guides he used were excellent for the sites. Our guide has a fantastic knowledge of ancient history of Pergamum, Ephesus, Aphrodisias, Pamukkale and Antalya. Another guide took over at Cappadocia and was also amazing with his in depth knowledge of all the sites and deep history of the happenings in this surreal area of Turkey. All our hotels were top quality and each having their unique charm that let us relax after very busy days of site seeing. Bulent took care of all our bookings and even sent us our boarding passes for our flights so we didn't have to bother. We missed the hot air balloons due to weather but Bulent bought our dinner wine as a nice gesture.  We will use him again when we return to see the sites we missed.

Luxury Turkey Travel Agent Review: 10-Day Solo Tour, Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ancient Historical Cities, Food, Culture
The whole trip was excellent! This is a local company led by a group of highly professional experts that clearly love their country, and know how to deliver the perfect trip. Even in the midst of the pandemic, they were able to craft a comprehensive trip that covered what I was looking for, mainly history, culture, food and landmarks. My trip covered Istanbul, Cappadocia, and various ancient cities including Ephesus, Pergamon, Hierapolis and Aphrodisias. They assigned me a senior guide, Yesim, and she made sure that the whole trip ran as smoothly as possible. Yesim is experienced, very knowledgeable and obviously loves what she does, and does it masterfully. She knew people everywhere we went and could easily run for public office, and win :). She also made sure to include an underlying food tour throughout every city and place we visited. The drivers were also excellent and highly professional individuals and the accommodations offered were of the highest quality. COVID19 protocols and procedures were diligently followed by all the guides, drivers and in all the hotels. In short, thanks to Derya, Ziya and Yesim, I had a wonderful and unforgettable time in Turkey!

Turkey Vacation Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Aphrodisias, Private Boat Charter, Rug Factory Tour
Marcus prepared a fantastic trip for us. Turkey has long been on my bucket list, and it blew away all my expectations. During the planning process, Marcus really listened to what we wanted to see/do plus understood our travel style and provided excellent suggestions that we never would have considered. For example, on a long transfer day, he recommended that we stop in Aphrodisias to see this ancient Greek city to break up the drive. It ended up being one of our favorite locations, and while not quite the level of splendor as more famous Ephesus, we preferred it because it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, seeing only a handful of people during our two hours there. The hotels were perfectly selected (the staff at our Cappadocia cave hotel were the nicest people ever), his food recommendations were spot-on (Turkish cuisine is amazing), and I am happy that I was introduced to the Turkish liquor called Raki. Our point of contact while in Turkey made it feel like we had a friend in the country who could assist with anything. Very helpful and extremely responsive with whatever we needed - he went above and beyond, and we owe him a HUGE thank you! Istanbul is now one of my favorite cities I've ever visited, Cappadocia's unique landscapes and the quintessential sunrise hot air balloon ride there were magical, and I am already dreaming of a return trip. Expertly planned and executed.

Turkey Luxury Trip Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Hierapolis, Bosphorus, Eight-Day Tour
It was a fantastic trip to Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Hierapolis, and, finishing my eight-day adventure set up by Zicasso’s travel agent, a tour along the Bosphorus. His company did it all for me! It would not have been possible for me to organize such an excellent trip.

Travel Review: Custom Turkey Vacation Package, Istanbul, Bosphorus Cruise, Cappadocia Balloon Ride, Kaymakli, Izmir, Ephesus,...
My wife and I traveled to Turkey in October and went to 3 different areas of the country: Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Ephesus. Patricia at the travel company suggested these three areas as well as specific activities in each place. Patricia's company was fantastic at organizing tour guides (who were great!), transfers, transportation and lodging. Patricia was also very flexible in designing our trip.

Luxury Turkey & Greece Trip Review: Ephesus, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Naxos, Historic Sites, Sailing, Sunset Cruise, Cooking Class

Our trip to Greece was fabulous. We visited Ephesus in Turkey, then traveled to Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and Naxos. It was a lovely trip, a mix of resorts and boutique hotels, of beaches, exploring old towns and old ruins, visiting museums and harbors, and sailing and cooking. We worked with Panos who is based in Athens with the travel agency to plan and schedule the trip. I'm happy to say that Panos was one of the very best travel agents I have ever worked with. He listened carefully to what my husband and I wanted to do, how we liked to travel, where we wanted to go, how much we wanted to spend, and what kind of accommodations we liked. He made suggestions and a tentative plan. All of his suggestions were terrific. We liked all of the hotels he recommended and were very impressed by the local guides he hired for us. It was especially terrific to see the sites and explore the ruins with knowledgeable guides who were so personable, entertaining and thoughtful. This is one of the benefits of working with someone who knows who to recommend. One thing I liked especially about working with Panos was his thoughtful attention to our comfort and safety. He made arrangements with local travel agents at each of the islands we visited to pick us up at our hotels for our various excursions and to make sure we got safely and comfortably back afterwards. He also made arrangements with a local travel agency to be "on call" for us if we needed assistance. We never needed additional help (no doubt because he planned things so well), but knowing we had someone nearby who we could call if we needed to was very reassuring. Panos also kept in contact with us through What's Ap, so that we could get his help if needed.I also appreciated Panos' extra efforts on our behalf. For example, he personally checked us in for our ferry rides from one island to the next and sent the necessary documents to me through What's Ap. All I had to do was show the check-in person the necessary document on my phone. He also sent me a list of recommended restaurants for our stays on each of the islands. Extra attention like this makes travel so much easier.
