Tanzania Safari from August to December: Serengeti, Grumeti, Namiri

What to expect on this itinerary
The focal point of most Serengeti safaris is the great wildebeest migration. But you don't need to visit during the migration to explore the wonders of these evocative grasslands. Travel between August and December, and the Serengeti experience is equally sublime, a chance to connect with nature, avoid the crowds, and still encounter hundreds of thousands of wild animals. With four distinctive experiences, this 10-day safari showcases how the Serengeti teems with life all year around.
Customizable Itinerary
Northern Serengeti – Safari in Serengeti's Most Abundant Year-Round Area
An early arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport is followed by an enchanting flight over the Serengeti plains, a light aircraft cruising the length of the grasslands and descending onto an airstrip in the north. It's the Northern Serengeti that has the greatest concentration of wildlife throughout the entire year, the proximity to the Mara River maintaining food and life throughout the driest of the months. The mammal population swells from May to July as the migration passes through. Many ungulates then make the perilous crossing over the river, although some of the herds prefer to stick to the fresh grazing pastures of the Northern Serengeti. This area is also on the migration route when the wildebeest and zebra return south, usually in scattered clumps of herds, perhaps just half of the number that started the annual journey.
From the airstrip, there's a brief game drive en route to the camp, then a hearty early lunch and time to rest under the canvas. Luxurious and chic, your safari camp reflects the quality of accommodation in Northern Serengeti. Expect an uninterrupted connection with nature, the sounds flowing into the opulent tent, and the curtains opening each morning to roaming mammals. Later in the afternoon, you head out on a game drive, an exploratory journey that unravels the diversity of the plains. Thompson's gazelle are scattered across one panorama; then turn around to encounter a cackle of a hyena. Giraffes and elephants are easily spotted from afar, then thrillingly encountered amongst the trees. A warthog scurries along as a baboon troop shouts from the bushes; enjoy a serene sunset as the hippos start emerging from the water.

I have just returned from a safari to Tanzania with my husband and 13 year old grandchild. The trip was arranged by Melanie at our travel agency. We began the trip in Arusha and from there went to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and then to the Serengeti. Melanie has a deep knowledge of Africa and is a super planner and took care of every detail to make this a most memorable adventure. She asked many questions about what we were looking for in a safari and proposed lots of alternative plans until we fine tuned our choices. She was very solicitous of our specific needs. My husband has a bad knee, Melanie made sure each accommodation we had was in the center of the action and required no extra walking. She even arranged for a little stepstool for each vehicle so my husband would not need to struggle to step up into the car. Melanie guided me in arranging our frequent flyer flights and an overnight stay in Amsterdam even though she was not receiving any commission on these arrangements. She advised me in regard to securing a Visa for Tanzania and making sure I had no issues in taking my grandson out of the USA without a hitch. She went over and above from beginning to end in putting this vacation together for us.
We stayed in a variety of accommodations. At Tarangire we stayed at a super luxurious lodge that sits atop a ridge with a view that can only be described as spectacular. We spent our days on safari with our guide who was expert at spotting and identifying the animals as we encountered them. He was a font of knowledge, and my grandson was enthralled with what he knew and the game we were seeing. He was an exceptional guide and we were lucky to have him for 5 days. Our next stop was a hotel which overlooked Manyara Lake. Not only did we explore the National Park, but it was special because Melanie arranged for a lesson in the art of cooking African style for my grandson once she learned he was a budding chef. We also took a tuk tuk tour of the local village to get a sense of the local culture. From there we drove to the Ngogongoro Crater. Melanie’s knowledge of the area was key because she selected a tented camp that overlooked the crater which allowed us to be one of the first safari vehicles to enter the Crater the following morning. The Crater was quite an experience and we were awed by its beauty and abundance of game. Again our guide was most able. No trip to Tanzania is complete without viewing and understanding the migration. Instead of a day long drive to view the migration, Melanie arranged for a small plane to fly us to Grumeti, in a seamless transfer we were picked up by our new guide who took us to the a luxurious moving tented camp in Serengeti. What a place! In our daily drives we were able to view the migrations and witness a multitude of animals who were both the hunters and the hunted. Our guide had encyclopedic knowledge about everything surrounding us. Our grandson was in heaven and used his camera to record over 1,000 photos. We made a lifetime of memories together.
Throughout out trip Melanie kept tabs on us, always knowing where we were and providing advice. She provided a heads up on changes in the airline schedule and was always available for a What’s App call. We had a wonderful adventure in Tanzania and highly recommend Melanie and the travel company.

You could not have planned the trip better. It was fantastic! Our safari driver from Rangers was great - again could not of been better. He pushed every day for us to see everything possible. Hes fun and incredibly knowledgeable and has a great command of the English language. You were right to schedule one day in Nairobi - so glad we did not change it to two days. We saw the last of the Big 5 - the black rhino in Kenya. We loved all of our accommodations and the people are so friendly, polite and helpful. We saw the Great Migration in Tanzania. We would not of changed one thing. People from other tour agencies were dissapointed that when they arrived in Kenya when we did as all of the Wildebeest had already migrated to Tanzania. What you scheduled for us was perfect. I do think that Tanzania is not well known but Kenya is to the average American like us. If it wasn't for you we would of never known about Tanzania. Tanzania has it all - except the black rhino at the Govenor's Camp- no need to even go to Kenya but I did want to go the the Elephant and Giraffe orphanages. We loved Capetown, the shark cage trip and the tour operator was wonderful. The 1/2 day Capetown trip was great. We went on the historic Capetown walking tour at 11:00 after we checked out. We added the Olduvai museum at the crater to our trip. We had a wonderful time and saw so much in 17 days including traveling from the East Coast; Arusha, Tarangire National park, Ngorongoro crater, Central Serengeti - Turner Springs, Norther Serengeti - Kokatonde, Masai - Mara, Nairobi, Victoria Falls and Capetown. A trip of a lifetime.

This was my 3rd trip to Africa and my first with this safari tour operator and I must say they were excellent. They paid great attention to detail and are incredibly knowledgeable about each country and the camps. Our trip was fantastic and they even had some surprises for us along the way. Overall we had a trip of a lifetime and all aspects of our travel were attended to from airport pickups to accommodations.
Rwanda was such an incredible country with so much beauty that we did not expect. The gorillas were out of this world. You MUST follow instructions and wear the appropriate clothing and shoes if you are going on a medium or difficult hike. Vrunga Lodge was so special and worth the 45 minute ride up the hill. One thing to note is that all over Rwanda their English is not as good as other countries so a little patience goes a long way. The people are lovely. We packed for a purpose and had the privilege to bring the items we packed to the school and give them away. That was a real highlight.
Tanzania was fantastic. We were a bit unlucky with the animals in the reserve but it was still so special and we had the opportunity to go into the Serengeti for a day. I HIGHLY recommend the horse riding (if you are experienced enough) as that was an incredible experience. Our server at Faru Faru was so lovely and we really enjoyed having him serve each of our meals- it made it very special and created a lovely bond.
Mozambique was beautiful.

Our trip was amazing. Our travel representative was usually very punctual about responding to emails and questions. I wish we had received some more specifics about the areas we were visiting - ex: clothing essentials (we needed much warmer clothing for evenings when staying in the open tents in Serengeti), and also info on the biting flies and how to combat them, and specifics on the amount of time between locations via driving, and if there was flexibility in the times. We did end up easily managing our own driver's time - they were open to suggestions to stop at areas if we wanted to - but we could have researched the areas we were visiting to see if there were important areas to see before leaving the area if we had known in advance the option was available. Otherwise - very nicely planned and we would use this company again - and would recommend them to friends.
