South Pacific Vacation Review: Australia & New Zealand, Aukland, Sydney, Wellington, Rotorua, Hobbiton, Doubtful Sound

~~I retired and my wife and I decided it was time to take the trip to New Zealand and Australia that we had been talking about for quite some time.  I discovered Zicasso while doing my initial research for the trip and decided to give it a try, in addition to the many standard tours we were looking into.  I had many different firms provide proposals and after doing my due diligence I settled on this firm.

Our agent listened and consistently provided options and insights that resulted in a month long itinerary that promised to deliver the experiences we were looking for.  She was a pleasure to deal with.

We spent two weeks in New Zealand beginning in Auckland, moving south through Hobbiton and Rotorua where we gained a deep appreciation for the Maori people and their culture.  Then on to Wellington the capital.  The ferry to Picton and the train to Christchurch were inspiring.  Then we drove from Christchurch to Mt. Cook and then on to Queenstown.  The night we spent on Doubtful Sound was the all-around highlight of the trip.  All throughout the tour guides, drivers and accommodations exceeded expectations.  Then we were on to Australia where our first stop was Sydney.  Alongside the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge a highlight was a half day guided tour of the city in a 1964 Holden.  Then we were on to Cairns and Port Douglas where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest awaited.  Our day on the Reef was extraordinary.  Snorkeling off the beach at Low Isle was an experience to remember.  Our day on the Daintree River and in the rainforest was unforgettable.  While driving we stopped as a male cassowary and four chicks crossed the road and disappeared into to the bush.  Now we were on to Ayers Rock where the magic of Uluru awaited.  The Sounds of Silence dinner in the desert as the sun set with Uluru in the distance and didgeridoo in the background was magical.  As our time was growing short we were off to Melbourne where we joined a tour on the Great Ocean Road.  Wow, the Twelve Apostles and the coast exceeded our expectations.  What a great place.  Only matched, maybe outdone by the hosts of the B&B’s we stayed at.  We’re not big B&B folks, but the Lock Ard and Little River B&Bs were perfect and we will try more in the future.

Our agent had truly delivered a trip of a lifetime.

Travel Review: Australia Vacation, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Kangaroo Island, Phillips Island, Daintree Rainforest, Ayers Rock

I'm not sure it matters how much time you spend in Australia, it won't be enough. Certainly our 14 days weren't.  We decided to try to 'do it all'. Sydney with the Blue Mountain, Kangaroo Island, Melbourne with the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island, Ayers Rock (Uluru), Cairns (Port Douglas) with the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. This meant 5 separate flights in-country with 5 travel days in addition to our arrival and departure. After gently warning us that this was a lot, our travel agency did everything they could to make our trip as memorable as they possibly could. This involved multiple email exchanges, discussions of possible tour sites, several changes of itinerary and all done with good humor and efficiency. Their hotel recommendations were uniformly excellent - or as good as the area allowed. The tours they arranged were equally excellent. While not providing dining recommendations they did suggest contacting hotel concierges, well before our departure, which allowed us to make several restaurant reservations at the begining of the trip, making our lives much easier. They arranged transport to and from airports which was uniformly good other than one episode of being forgotten. The taxi cost was subsequently covered.  They had a harder time getting the transport company to spell our name correctly. Fortunately they were only one letter off so easily recognizable. We were provided thorough lists of contacts with phone numbers which did occasionally come in handy. Our travel agency made all of our in country flight reservations. We were suprised at our first flight that seats had not been chosen. While we understood the reasoning, some prefer an aisle versus a window it was an unnecessary worry.  We were pleased that this was rectified for the remainig flights after we contacted them. Overall, we felt that our agency did an excellent job for us. If we were to return to Australia or New Zealand we would certainly contact this company again.

Travel Review: Australia Family Tour, Sydney, Kangaroo Island, Uluru, Great Barrier Reef, Blue Mountains, Camel Ride, Snorkeling
A family trip was planned for 5 adults and 3 children. The travel company put together an excellent custom tour of Australia for us. I provided what i wanted to do: Sydney, Kangaroo Island, Uluru, and the Great Barrier Reef. My travel consultant then made suggestions as to the custom tours we could take.  She took into account that children were involved.  And after numerous back and forth we arrived at the perfect itinerary (I think). Because we wanted to see and do everything possible, we did not have much down time.  But it worked out well with easy tours in-between more strenuous activities.  In Sydney we toured the city, toured the Harbor, climbed the Sydney Bridge, and visited the Blue Mountains.  Then it was off to Kangaroo Island for 2 days of exploration.  We stayed at a wonderful Bed & Breakfast, which spoiled us thoroughly.  Uluru was next with a Sunset Camel ride, Sunrise at Uluru, Maruku Dot Painting, Sunrise at Kata Tjuta and a hike to Walpa Gorge.  At Port Douglas we did the Day Tour and snorkeled off of Coral Cay.  This was perfect as the waters were rough due to a storm but calm within the Cay.  We also did a private Cape Tribulation & Daintree rainforest tour.  It was a packed itinerary, but thoroughly enjoyed by all.  The suggested tours were excellent.

Travel Review: Solo Trip to Australia, Sydney, Port Douglas, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, Great Barrier Reef, Wildlife, Concert

The arrangement of my trip to Australia was done in 2 weeks time easily through the phone and by email. I told the travel agent, the places I wanted to see and he gave me a 2.5 week itinerary that hit all the spots. I went to Sydney, Port Douglas (GBR), Ayers Rock, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island.

Sydney - location of hotel chosen was perfect. It was within 10 min walks to both the Sydney harbour bridge and opera house.

Port Douglas was chosen over Cairns which turned out to be a good choice as the GBR, Daintree and Mossman Gorge were closer to Port Douglas.

A cruise was booked for my GBR experience to Low Isles. I would NOT recommend this one to adults or solo travelers as it was full of children (99% of ship was children and their family) and wasn't too exciting. I specified that I wanted a tour without a lot of kids but I got this instead. I think skipping Low Isles and going further away to other parts of the reef would have been more memorable.

Ayers rock - There could have been better arrangement here as the travel agent booked my flight early in the morning so I got to Ayers rock at 10am. However, the hotel he booked let people in their rooms at 3pm. There really wasn't much to do around the hotel for 5 hours. It was hot, uncomfortable and I much rather enjoy Port Douglas a bit longer and taken a later flight instead. I asked the hotel staff whether they could get a room ready sooner as I was sick with a cold. The hotel staff still did not have my room ready at 3pm - the promised time for a room. With some juggling, they had to give me another room instead.

The arrangement of activities during Ayers rock was not the best. I had a dinner booked the first night at 6pm. Then the next day, he booked me a 12km walk around Uluru with a 7km hike around kata rock in the afternoon. Bad idea! It was 40C so I don't think both walks should have been on the same day at all. He did not tell me that he booked a 12km walk. He just said he booked a sunrise Uluru tour. Had I known the walk was that long in that heat, I would have gotten it changed earlier so that I didn't lose money switching to another tour.

Adelaide was great. I did my own tours without the help of the company but it was a good city choice. Hotel was in a good location.

Kangaroo Island was also a good experience. If you want to see animals or be in a quiet place away from bigger cities, go there.

Overall, I would go back to Australia. I saw so many things but I also know I missed a lot of the country too (Brisbane, Melbourne, gold coast etc). Just another reason to go back. It was nice of the company to help book my tours so quickly but some improvements especially in Ayers Rock would have made the trip a bit better. I would use this company again but would ask the agent to lay out every little detail about each location/hotel/tour so that I could decide whether a change is warranted.

Travel Review: Australia Honeymoon, Port Douglas, Sydney, Cairns, Hamilton Island, Daintree Rainforest, Blue Mountains, Uluru

Pre-wedding Honeymoon: Hamilton Island. Silky Oaks Lodge. Daintree Rainforest. Port Douglas. Cairns. Kuranda. Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Blue Mountains. Sydney. Our pre-wedding honeymoon was absolutely amazing! It was very enjoyable and flawless. Zicasso's travel plan for us was perfect. Our agent's knowledge of the country and her suggestions made in the planning of this trip made the transition to each place easy. She was so helpful and accommodating. One of the days during our trip, it was suppose to rain and we had an outdoor tour schedule that day. Less than 24 hours before a scheduled tour, at our request, she switched our tour with one of our free days. As a result, we were able to enjoy our tour, rain free. She was absolutely amazing, I feel as if she were with us throughout the entire trip.

Did a Segway tour around the base of uluru. Flew to Cairns and onto Port Douglas: Major highlight of the tour. The lodge was tranquil-right on the Mossman river-terrific spa.. Snorkled the Great Barrier Reef-Amazing! Helicopter into the rain forest stopping at a waterfal for lunch and then over the Great Barrier Reef. Private tour by 4x4 into areas of the rainforest. Flew to Brisbane and spent a day on a private tour of the Australia Zoo-best day evah. New Zealand was beautiful. Toured toured the south island with a small tour group. Flew to Fiji staying on a private island with its private resort Matangi. Most beautiful, tranquil, kind people. Great service, food. Snorkled and spent time in the spa. I fleww to Australia business class via an Australian airline. Comfortable seats, layed down flat for sleep. provided pad for the seat, pillow and blanket-actually got some sleep. Coming home out of Fiji it was American Airlines business class-Seats did not lay down-foot piece remained dowm. I purchased business class to be able to lay down because my legs swell and I have arthritis so the trip home was miserable.
