Costa Rica Vacation Review: La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Canyoning, Rafting, Ziplining, Wildlife, Hiking, 10 Days

Our 10-day adventure to Costa Rica in April was amazing. We spent time in La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Each area offered so much to do and see, and we took advantage of every minute.

We did a number of tours: hanging bridges in Arenal, a sloth hike, canyoning/rafting, a night walk with Costa Rican dinner, a coffee and chocolate tour, hike in the cloud forest, zipline, catamaran sailing, and a private guided tour in Manuel Antonio National Park. We had private drivers taking us from each location.

Zicasso’s travel company was very attentive to all our requests and put together a great itinerary. Having them to correspond with through WhatsApp during our trip was wonderful. I would highly recommend them for your trip planning. Thank you to the staff who were always there when needed. They are a five-star travel agency.

Costa Rica Luxury Vacation Review: San Jose, Manuel Antonio National Park, La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano, Nine-Day Trip

I cannot say enough good things about the team at Zicasso’s travel partner. It's not just that they arranged an amazing Costa Rican adventure for me and my family, but it's the service they provided that really made everything so seamless.

The amazing service began during the planning stages, when the team worked with us to build a travel itinerary that fit our timing and budget (not easy, given it was the Christmas holiday season and we got a late start in planning). Based on our interests, they provided a menu of options in each region of the country. When we had questions about excursions, they were quick to respond and happy to provide recommendations based on their intimate knowledge of the activities and providers. In the week leading up to the trip, they provided a detailed itinerary, as well as instructions on what to expect when we landed in San Jose.

The incredible service continued once we were on the ground in Costa Rica. Our travel agent and his daughter met us at the airport with a welcome gift of local chocolates. He introduced our driver and went over the itinerary with us. We exchanged WhatsApp information and he encouraged me to text/call at any time with any questions, issues, or feedback.

From the airport, we made our way to Manuel Antonio, with a stop for lunch and fresh fruit. We checked into the hotel and a lovely room with panoramic views of the ocean and a magnificent sunset. It was my birthday, and the travel team arranged for a lovely fresh fruit tray to be sent to the room, as well as restaurant reservations that evening.

After three days in Manuel Antonio, we were driven to La Fortuna/Arenal (a long drive) and checked into a large resort with excellent facilities and incredibly responsive service (we called to ask for a roll-away bed, and within two minutes three people showed up with the bed and sheets). While we were in Arenal, we messaged the travel team with questions about potential changes to the itinerary (including changing the time of a couple of activities, as well as adding an activity), and they responded within minutes, making all the changes!

After three days in La Fortuna/Arenal, we headed to Monteverde for a couple of days at a resort, a lovely property in a great location. We enjoyed a couple of days in Monteverde before heading back to San Jose for our flight back to the States. On the drive back, our travel agent called to thank us for entrusting our trip to them, but I had to stop him, as it was really us who needed to thank him for making the trip so enjoyable (and so seamless)!

Costa Rica Travel Review: Monte Verde, La Fortuna, San Jose, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano, Ziplinging

Our travel agency organized the perfect tour of Costa Rica. Our small group of 4 were treated as VIPs from the moment we arrived at San Jose airport, until the day we flew home. We even received a "welcome to Costa Rica" call and special "goodbye" call from our agency. Every transfer and guided tour was on time and the drivers were good. There were no worries or concerns, each day was perfectly organized and each hotel was informed of our itinerary. Our travel agency provided us with a free cell phone for local calls as well as walkie-talkies to stay in touch with each other. This added an even higher level of security to our trip.

We wanted to experience an environmental tour that would introduce us to the rain forest, the flora, fauna, birds, reptiles & animals of Costa Rica. We were amazed by the scenery and the knowledge of our guides on each of our tours. Costa Rica is truly magical. All of the hotels were interesting and clean, the staff friendly and efficient.  We stayed in bungalows & cabins in the heart of the rain forest! The food was very good and served in more than ample quantities. Our last few days were spent at the Belmar Hotel in Monteverde and the luxury of that small inn and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, were a great way to end our stay.

Our only disappointment was that our internal flight with Nature Air from Tortuguero National Park turned out to have a connection at San Jose airport with a 3.5 hour wait for the second flight to Arenal. We were expecting a direct flight, and more time to explore the village of La Fortuna.

We would definitely recommend this travel company and will use Zicasso Handcrafted Travel to help us book holidays in the future.

Costa Rica Vacation Review: Luxury Family Trip, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Sloth Walking Tour, Canyoneering
Costa Rica is the place to go now!  Just returned from a first-time visit to this great destination.  The key measurement for our family is: will we go back again?...and the answer is a resounding yes.We stayed for eight days.  This is a good time frame, but a couple of extra days would have been good to add.  We flew into San Jose and was greeted by our travel planner and his wonderful wife, then introduced to a long-time company driver who drove us the 3 hours to Arenal Volcano area.  Didn't seem that long, especially since we stopped for lunch along the way.Our stay at the hotel in Arenal was the best hotel that we have been to in Central/South America.  The view of the volcano in the morning was picturesque (search up Arenal Volcano pics, and that is literally what you saw when you woke up).  The hot springs-fed pools were a welcome relaxation each evening.  We did several activities in the area and these were the best of our Costa Rica visit...see details below. After three nights in Arenal, we headed across the lake to meet our ride to Monteverde.  More of a local road trip through the hills.  Adding the lake portion not only broke up the drive, but it also saved a little time overall.  Monteverde has a cooler climate, so bring a light jacket or sweater.  A nice place to visit if you have a couple of free days, otherwise I would say spend the time in Arenal and/or Manuel Antonio.Another couple of hour drive to Manuel Antonio.  Did stop for zip lining at Los Suenos.  Another recommended item to break-up the drive.  Manuel Antonio was smaller and more quaint of a beach town than I expected.  The larger town is Quepos, about  5-6 miles away.  Here is another part where I wish we had a extra day to hang out at the beach and explore the local shops and establishments.Overall, the people of Costa Rica were friendly and welcoming.  Felt safer than any US city.  Never had a problem communicating...most locals spoke pretty good English.  Food was fine, but nothing especially memorable...in fact, the best food was the local casado (look up on youtube).  Can say that everything tasted fresh...from farm to table. Most important tip/recommendation: Go Now!  The crowds were non-existent since post-pandemic travel is just now starting to gear up.  Highly recommend you get to Costa Rica before it gets re-discovered.  It's such a great place that I am convinced it will soon be the go-to Latin American destination. Finally, use this travel company.  Since it was our first time and didn't know the lay of the land, our travel planner was very helpful during the course of our several Zoom calls and answered all of our questions.  The itinerary went smoothly and really appreciated another planner checking in with us along the way, just wanting to make sure we were taken great care of...which we were. Can't wait to get back again to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Travel Review: La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio, Rainforest, Ziplining, Whitewater Rafting, Cuisine, Wildlife, Nine-Day Tour

We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and spent our time in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio.

We were welcomed at the airport by a driver and tour guide, and transferred to La Paz, where we had a great tour of the gardens, waterfall, and wonderful wildlife (including sloths), then continued our drive to the resort near La Fortuna. The hotel was beautiful, with magnificent rooms, volcano views, and a spectacular, expansive buffet each morning with an omelet station, fresh fruits, and an extended selection of local, delicious foods, including a smoothie station. The hotel staff were friendly and provided great service. On the first night, we ate at a restaurant at the hotel which had a limited menu for our family.

We had a wonderful guide on day two who brought us to the Arenal rainforest, with hanging bridges, an aerial tramway, and a zipline which was beyond a spectacular, adventurous experience that we will not forget. We enjoyed the hotel’s thermal pools and excellent dinner in La Fortuna (varied menu and open to substitutions).

On day three, we had another day of adventure on the Balsa River for whitewater rafting. Our family of six had a spectacular guide who kept us exhilarated and safe! It was a blast and perhaps the best family activity! We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant in La Fortuna (good food, but pricey).

We had another great guide for our hike in the Arenal Volcano National Park on our fourth day and dinner at a local place with a very limited atmosphere, but a spectacular meal brought out on grills to continue the cooking of steak, chicken, shrimp, and fresh fish, with delicious sauces on the side. It was plentiful, wonderfully displayed, and delicious.

Day five was supposed to be a five-hour transfer to Manuel Antonio to include a crocodile encounter and lunch. Due to the Easter holiday week, it took 10 hours, but our driver was kind and patient, and we enjoyed our time together. We learned a good deal of Spanish on the way. We arrived where rainforest and beach meet at the hotel. The hotel was beautiful, but rustic, overlooking the water, and we had dinner. The staff were all great and helpful, getting our luggage handled at 5am and transportation as needed for restaurants.

On day six, we enjoyed the morning at the adult pool. There were monkeys all around us in the canopies and trees. It was exciting to watch and take photos! We had lunch at the hotel and then the guide picked us up on time and took us for a fun adventure on Damas Island: an estuary and mangrove kayaking tour. We enjoyed the dinner provided with the kayak tour, then had a late-night BBQ at the hotel!

Day seven was action-packed, with a transfer and spectacular, passionate tour guide for our outing to Manual Antonio National Park. We had lunch at the hotel and then another very exciting ATV adventure! We had a fabulous dinner at a café with a beautiful atmosphere.

On our last day, we were transferred very early to the airport and said goodbye to an amazing, adventurous family vacation.

We want to thank Zicasso’s travel agents for all their help in planning this vacation. They were patient, attentive, and accommodating of our relentless changes to the plans and restaurants. They were with us all the way from planning to arrival, and always available for any questions or guidance. All the plans were executed seamlessly and on time, with quality recommendations and team support. Thank you for all the great moments and memories!

Costa Rica Luxury Trip Family Review: Tortuguero, Arenal & Monteverde, Mistico Park, Volcano Hike, Horseback Riding, 9-Day Tour
Our family (with two kids) just came back from a 9 day trip to Costa Rica. We flew into SJO, had a one night stay at a hotel about 1 hour outside of San Jose, and then visited Tortuguero, Arenal, and Monteverde. First of all, I want to pay the highest compliment to our travel agency. They are the most dedicated, competent, and personable travel agency we've worked with. As advertised, their service is truly 24/7. They are super attentive and responsive before and during the trip until the very end. We were originally scheduled to arrive mid day at SJO and head over to the hotel. But our departure flight got canceled last minute, so we had to scramble to rebook another flight. I sent a Whatsapp message at midnight Costa Rica time to warn them that there was a change of plan. Alex (the owner) replied to me right away to reassure me that whatever flight we could get on, they would meet us at the airport. We rebooked a flight the next day that arrived at 1:30am. Alex and her daughter, along with the driver, showed up to greet us, with a gift bag and delightful energy that immediately made us feel not only welcomed, but at ease that we were in trusted hands. They were able to quickly rearrange logistics for the first day including various transportations and tours. So we didn't miss anything, and we did get to enjoy the hotel for half a day as well. What felt like a crisis was expertly dealt with by Alex and team. While we were in Arenal, I inquired about an activity that was not originally on the itinerary. I did not expect them to put together anything for us since it's quite late. But within an hour or so, Alex proposed a private adventure package with all logistics confirmed at a very reasonable price. I was very impressed and gladly took up the offer. Our trip involved quite a bit of logistics (land/water transportation plus guided adventures), and everything went flawlessly. I know how much work went in behind the scenes to deliver that kind of perfection. It's also apparent to me that the agency picks the best partners (drivers, guides). They are all very knowledgable and attentive. The people experience in Costa Rica is equally, if not more, memorable than the natural beauty. Now about the trip itself... we used private transportations and tours throughout the trip. It costs more but is definitely worth it in my opinion. It gave us all kinds of flexibility that allowed us to have a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Of the three places (Tortuguero, Arenal and Monteverde), we enjoyed Tortuguero the most. It is a remote area with very little tourist traffic. The tropical jungle is prestine and exotic. We had a terrific guide who took us to less traveled canals and spotted so many animals. The kids especially had a fantastic time and learned so much. We spent 2 days there which feels pretty reasonable. After that we spent four nights in Arenal. We did the hanging bridge walk at Mistico Park, volcano hike at the Arenal 1968 trail, horseback riding, and an evening at a family-owned ecofarm. We enjoyed everything. We weren't able to see the tip of the Arenal volcano the whole time because of the cloud. The best view we had of the volcano was actually on our way to Monteverde traversing lake Arenal. The drive to Monteverde from Arenal was bumpy (unpaved road for the most part) but beautiful. It's a charming mountain town. We did a nightwalk in the forest and then a hike in the Monteverde National Park. The nightwalk was interesting to me but the kids were a bit disappointed because we only saw some birds and insects. One of them got scared of the dark. The guide was terrific BTW. The cloud forest was beautiful and full of life. It was mostly clear on that day and we didn't see the iconic cloud-covered forest. One of the kids got stomachache and we had to cut it short...Overall we experienced three very different natural environments. We spent a lot of time on the road and in the water. It offered another way of seeing extensive part of the country. It's beautiful everywhere and the people are genuinly nice and welcoming.
