Amberley Castle – Welcome to Royal Rural England

Your journey begins with a private transfer from the airport to the rolling South Downs of West Sussex. Your destination is Amberley Castle, a hidden gem with 900 years of history enclosed behind a 60-foot high curtain wall. As the portcullis rises (figuratively, as the gates are always open to welcome you), you enter a world of landscaped gardens and unrivaled tranquility. This is the first of your six castle stays, offering an immediate sense of decadence with its medieval architecture and roaming peacocks.

After settling into your room, which may feature an elaborate four-poster bed or antiques, take time to explore the 12 acres of grounds. A spa bathroom helps alleviate any travel aches, and the castle offers exquisite dining options within its ancient barrel-vaulted rooms. Settle into the grandeur, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine by the fireplace, and prepare for the royal journey that lies ahead.

Detailed Description

The English landscape is liberally dotted with castles. The timeless structures revel in their old grandeur, with the faded stone and stately rooms revealing many centuries of history. Each is sublimely situated, standing alone amidst the glorious colors of the English countryside. They're national treasures. And they're not just for sightseeing. With this England castles tour, you don't merely walk around and explore ancient castles; you spend the night. Wander through the ornate hallways, open the door to an elaborate four-poster bed, and delight in the sense of regal splendor.

Over nine days, you enjoy six different castles; each showcases another architectural era and new narratives on England's royal past. There is an excess of 12th-century medieval charm, ancestral homes of earls and bishops, and fortified 14th-century estates hidden behind curtains of oak trees. Staying in these timeless castles enables you to recreate history, not just glimpse it on a day trip. In most of them, you're amongst a small handful of guests enjoying exclusive access to the vast landscaped grounds and magisterial interiors. These aren't places for the paying public. They're intimate destinations for guests who appreciate being treated like the monarchs who used to visit them.

This handcrafted tour in England takes you from London to Edinburgh with a private driver guide. The castle accommodation is nestled into the countryside, away from the bustle of the cities. However, your journey north weaves past many of England's most iconic attractions. Stop at Stonehenge for Neolithic brilliance, wander the streets of World Heritage Bath, visit the picture-perfect birthplace of Shakespeare and explore Northern Europe's largest Gothic cathedral. With the castles providing a serene and sublime evening, the days are spent connecting the stunning dots of England's diverse destinations.

The lifestyle of monarchs is very much a focus on this luxury itinerary, so there are a few attractions that are simply essential. See the splendor of Windsor Castle, the Queen's official home and the largest occupied castle in the world. Admire the flamboyance of Henry VIII by discovering Hampton Court. And complete the trip with a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official Scottish residence.

It's not just impressive architecture. Discover the kaleidoscopic tones of the countryside as you weave through rural life. Your journey isn't on the motorway. It's mostly along the quiet country roads that reflect classic images of England. Every angle is a postcard, complete with a cute market town, dry stone walls, and a fairytale cottage on the horizon. Head through the Cotswolds, the Yorkshire Dales, the untamed landscapes of Northumberland, and then into Scotland. The journey finishes in Edinburgh, home to a famous castle and more royal history. You'll be staying close to the city, in a castle surrounded by luscious woodlands.

Review: England Vacation, London, Bath, Thornbury, Cotswolds, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, Churchill War Rooms

Overall, this travel company provided a fantastic traveling experience. We were able to enjoy many of the iconic attractions in London, including the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Churchill War Rooms, and the Tower of London, as well as explore on our own. We also enjoyed afternoon tea and wonderful play in the West End! In addition, they provided some wonderful dining recommendations that turned out to be a few of our favorite meals!

Beyond London, we were able to explore numerous towns and villages in the southern England, including Thornbury, Cheddar, Bath, the Cotswolds, Winchester, and Windsor.

Travel Review: Luxury England & Scotland Tour, Highlands, Hadrian's Wall, 16-Day Trip
The travel company listened carefully to our wish list of locations and sites and worked hard to make a very ambitious touring schedule work including a trip to Hadrian’s Wall which is in the middle of nowhere! The guide they provided in Scotland was outstanding. He had extensive historical and local knowledge that was not in any guide book. He went out of his way to delight my teenage history-buff son.

England Travel Review: London, Windsor, York, Durham, Stonehenge, Hadrian's Wall, Soccer, Yorkshire Dales, 10-Day Trip
This is our third trip working with a Zicasso-recommended agency to plan our travel for an international vacation. We were again very pleased with the agency and enjoyed our trip immensely. Zicasso recommended two different agencies and we spoke to both. Mirella with this travel agency contacted us first. She was friendly and listened carefully to our very vague idea of what we wanted to do with the time we had for a trip to England in May. After the initial conversation, she quickly proposed a general itinerary, and we followed it with a phone call to ask questions and make refinements. After a couple of additional calls, we had a plan. We chose this agency over the other travel agent who contacted us because Mirella contacted us first, responded fastest to our questions, and gave us a proposed itinerary very quickly. Neither my husband nor I had been to England before, and trying to narrow down what to see in England in 10 days was absolutely overwhelming. The one request that we did have was to attend a Premier League soccer match involving Newcastle United. Newcastle was playing two matches during our planned time in England, so Mirella was tasked with finding tickets for us to one of those matches, and then building the entire rest of the stay around that date. The match she found tickets for was in Leeds, and in light of the limited time, and my husband's interest in history, she proposed an itinerary that included visiting Hadrian's Wall, and spending half of the trip in the northern England in Durham and York. The remaining 5 days she proposed we spend sightseeing in London and visiting museums with private guides and taking a day trip with a guide to Stonehenge and Windsor. We finalized the plan, and it ended up being a perfect initial foray into England!

England Review: Multi-Generational Family Vacation, Stonehenge, Buckingham Palace, Cotswolds, Shakespeare, Oxford, Local Farm

Our trip to England was fantastic!  We traveled with my parents and my two teenaged boys. We only had 10 days for the trip, so we decided to keep our destinations relatively close together.  Our travel planner did a great job of listening to our must do items and weaving together an itinerary that hit everything without exhausting us.  They were very prompt in responding to any questions or changes and we were never left hanging.

We visited London, Stonehenge, The Cotswolds, Stratford, and Oxford.  During our four days in London, we went to Westminster Abbey, the Churchill War Rooms, Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Gardens, and The British Museum.  We saw two shows in London, one at the Globe and another right by Piccadilly Circus.  From there, we went to Hampton Court, Stonehenge, spent the night at a Castle in South Gloucestershire, took a tour of The Cotswolds, took in all things Shakespeare in Stratford, visited Blenheim Palace, Windsor Castle and had an owl evening at a falconry center where we got to handle and 'fly' several owls.  The trip was a perfect mix of city and country without having to drive hours on end.

The travel planner sent us a binder a couple weeks out from the trip with each day mapped out with our itinerary for the day, then any tickets or directions we would need for that day.  It was extremely organized and made everything very easy to keep track of.  They had suggestions for activities and places to eat, which were very helpful.

The trip was wonderful and everyone in the family loved it!

England & Scotland Luxury Vacation Review: Dartmouth, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Edinburgh Whisky Experience, Plymouth, St. Ives
By every measure the trip was superb. The travel company is an outstanding travel agent.  The trip was 23 days long, very complex, exquisitely planned to meet our goals, and executed flawlessly.  In particular, we wanted to visit disparate places in England and Scotland that we had not previously seen.  This involved staying at eight hotels, having three knowledgeable and enjoyable guides for multiple days as well as several drivers to ferry us to and from various locations since we chose not to drive ourselves. In broad terms, we visited Cornwall, the Cotswolds, Oxford, Stratford upon Avon, Bletchley Park, the Peak District, York and Edinburgh.  The specific list of places, sites, institutions and activities was comprehensive, adhering to a daily schedule while allowing us quite adequate time to explore on our own.  The travel company selected numerous places to visit of which we had been unaware but were very pleased to see.The company was impressively attendant to the details of our trip including tickets to all locations, specific instructions for train travel, sorting out our clothes cleaning needs, and even finding a solution to our need for Covid testing while on a very tight schedule.I heartily recommend the travel company.

England Luxury Trip Review: London & Countryside, Theater, Shakespeare, Yorkshire Dales, Bath, Cotswold, Tea Time, History & Sites
Overall, our two week England/London trip was great! The planning was tailored to our needs exceptionally well. The English countryside part of the trip was wonderful.  Our guides/drivers were knowledgable, friendly, and gave us insights that were greatly appreciated. All of the scheduled pick-ups and tours happened on schedule. Our accommodations were for the most part, better than expected. And, when there were glitches, things were resolved quickly. For example, we were able to switch out of a sub-par room that had serious mold and mildew problems, into a better room and were then compensated with a free dinner. At one hotel, we were told that we would have to pay for the two nights lodging because the company that was supposed to set up a voucher had no credit there. It took a few days, but that was resolved to our satisfaction as well. The only other problem was at Stratford Upon Avon. The description of the day we received before we departed indicated we would get to see Shakespeare's birthplace, Hall's Croft and Anne Hathaway's cottage.  Our voucher, however, only provided us with admission to the birthplace. We never got to Hall's Croft, and had to pay an extra fee to see Anne Hathaway's cottage. Hopefully we will get reimbursed for that extra expense. The responsiveness of the local organizing company was appreciated. We would not hesitate to use this travel team again. Our contact person was great to work with, and we loved what he put together for us.
